Choosing the right outdoor furniture is not an easy thing to do especially if you find yourself standing right in front of a wide variety of choices available nowadays. Before you buy, take a good look at all weather rattan furniture that is sold in the market. Once you have decided on what to purchase, the question of maintaining and protecting your final choice should also be thought of. Everyone buying new furniture prefers long-lasting qualities and will not need replacement in a short time.
But just like all furniture which have seen years of usage, there will come a time that you will need to restore the original look and sheen of the surface as well as to weatherproof it back to withstand further the test of time. To ensure that your rattan outdoor furniture receives total protection, weatherproofing is suggested. You will need simple tools and materials to achieve your purpose. The tools you'll need are the following: sponge paintbrush, paint tray, wood furniture sealer, soft washcloth, breathing mask, tarp and oil-based wood primer and marine varnish.
Before proceeding, put on your breathing mask. This is a safety measure for you just in case you are not comfortable with the odor of paint and sealer that will be applied on the surface of the furniture. Your working area should be outdoors or in a well-ventilated environment. Then position your furniture on top of a tarp or cover to protect your floor from drips of any liquid material that will be applied on your furniture. Then start with the first step by thoroughly wiping the furniture with a slightly damp, soft wash-cloth to remove any dust or debris. For this first procedure, you may also use an upholstery brush to remove stubborn dirt from all crevices of the furniture. Make sure that the furniture is completely dry.
The next thing to do is to pour sealer into a paint tray. With the aid of a sponge paintbrush, apply the sealer with smooth even strokes making sure that the bigger parts of the furniture are sealed first before sealing the smaller ones. Third step, once your initial coat of sealer has dried, sand lightly in the direction of wood grain. Use garden gloves to protect your hands from splinters while sanding. Fourth, remove dirt and dust with a clean paint brush. Fifth, apply two coats of primer to the furniture.
Primers are used as base coats or undercoats to prepare a surface for painting. Completely coat all surfaces and allow the primer to dry thoroughly. Drying may take 30 minutes to one hour. Sixth step, is to apply two light coats of paint or varnish to the furniture. Completely coat all surfaces and allow the paint or varnish to dry. Final step is to apply marine varnish as top coat which will protect your furniture from the elements of nature. Let dry overnight before use. By proper maintenance, you are sure that your rattan outdoor furniture or any other outdoor furniture can last for years.
