Scandinavian wood has long been associated with construction and the furniture trade. There are many reasons why this is so,but the main use of pine timber or lumber,is for use in the paper trade. It is used for pulp. For purposes of use of resource, it is good because,most parts of the tree can be used,this is a surprising fact and does highlight the need for a strong recycling program.
The rubber wood tree is one of the best used trees and a great example using a resource to the full. The rubber wood tree has long been used for latex production.By cutting the trunk at angles the sap of latex is released and runs into collecting chambers. This in turn is processed for the rubber industry.To satisfy the demand there are huge rubber plantations.
When the latex is not so abundant in the trees, they are felled. The practice used to include a burning policy, this in itself is not environmentally acceptable today. The owners of the plantations came up with a cunning plan to use the wood for the furniture trade. There were problems as the timber is not very stable. To overcome this, the wood is cut into small pieces, and glued together to make larger boards. This is very suitable for the production of farmhouse tables and coffee tables.
In hotter countries of South America a strain of pine named Radiata Pine grows naturally. It grows very fast due to the heat. Brazil has come in for criticism about its ability to sustain it’s forests, the wood dense by nature is very suitable for the flat packed furniture industry, pine wardrobes being the single most popular product. Pine beds and pine chest of drawers, are also mass produced there, these are usually a spindle type which uses smaller amounts of wood
Radiata pine produces a dense very brittle grain,which has little flexibility,which is why if pine beds are made with it the side rails tend to snap. By contrast the longer growing times of Scandinavia, produce strong wood suitable for joinery,construction and furniture making.
